Eclipse Babies
July 31, 2008
So we think we’re tense in the hours before the Solar Eclipse? What if you carried that energy for your entire life? That’s in essence what happens to those born on an eclipse; they come into their life on Earth charged with the intensity, and perhaps shadowed by, eclipse energy. My theory is that those born under a Solar Eclipse may be the source of tumultuous events in their own life scenario, while those who arrive under a Lunar Eclipse may experience the chaos as swirling around them, reflected (appropriate for the Moon) in surrounding events. I’ve only just begun to explore this idea, so stay tuned for further discussion.
Right now let’s look at a Lunar Eclipse baby around whom plenty of trauma and drama has swirled in her lifetime: Gloria Vanderbilt (Feb 20 1924, 9:55 AM, New York). Known in 1930’s media as the ‘Poor Little Rich Girl,’ Gloria was the subject of a volatile, protracted, and very public custody battle for possession of herself and her millions upon the deathof her father when she was an infant (possibly signified by Pluto, retrograde at birth, which continued backward progress for only about another month, then turned and passed back over the birth point). Ms. Vanderbilt was unusual for the time, early on attempting a career; first as a painter, then a textile designer, and finally as one of the original American designers who rose to fame in the 1970s as entrepreneurs who popularized the designer label on mass market goods. All Ms. Vanderbilt’s career choices are amazingly faithful to her Taurus Ascendant (and the Swan she chose as her symbol is also a good fit), ruler Venus in Aries (Self-assertion) in the subconscious 12th, widely conjunct Chiron (working out wounds through beauty?) and to her Pisces Sun at 00 degrees, conjunct the South Node (the past influences the identity and Soul path), ruler Neptune in Leo in mutual reception, trine Venus ruler Mars which is conjunct Jupiter in 8th (receiving the support of others, expansive and active imagination that powers the Will), and suggesting she knew innately how to expand her audience, and to make her inheritance grow. The Sun is also semi-square Chiron, implying that the primal wound will be experienced to some extent through the discovery of the ‘I am.’
For the other side of the birth Lunar Eclipse we see the Moon at 00 Virgo, making this a very tight pattern, almost like you’d expect a little ‘ding, I’m here!’ on the child’s arrival! The Moon is conjunct Earth and the North Node, hinting that both the destiny and the material experience will be inexorably entwined with the emotional Beingness; add to this a semi-square of the Moon/ Earth to Juno, and we see that this was, for her, the way to empowerment, and perhaps also instrumental in realizing, like the goddess Juno, that she could not personally control everything. This latter idea is tragically apparent with the suicide of one of her sons, who threw himself from the 14 th floor family apartment right in front of his mother; she has three other sons, one of whom is reporter Anderson Cooper.
A varied marriage history does suggest recurring emotional changes, if not turmoil, and supports the Lunar Eclipse theory. She had a short, early marriage to a Hollywood agent; a second to conductor Leopold Stokowski, 40 years her senior, with whom she had two sons and from whom she parted amicably some years later; a third to producer/ director Sydney Lumet; and a fourh to Wyatt Cooper, with whom she had two more sons, and who died on the operating table, leaving Ms. Vanderbilt a widow.
Though we can’t know with any certainty that Ms. Vanderbilt sees her life as tempestuous, and herself subject to a high drama factor in events outside her direct control, we can guess that many of the events of her life at the very least required a strong character just to survive them, and her business success of course required another kind of energy and strength, equally vital for the secure development of the Self, especially important for someone with the Sun at 00 degrees.
So, as we await the upcoming Solar event, most of us are able to count our lucky stars (!) that we did not enter this life under the banner of energy, drama, and trauma that accompanies birth at the time of an eclipse. Doesn’t that theory make our own problems seem a lot more manageable?

Hi Julie,
Great post – thank you. I wonder if Vanderbilt’s family expectations and general social milieu were a constant drag on her attempts at a creative career. The Moon is eclipsing the Sun here; it rules her 4th house of family and heritage (specifically her father), while the Sun rules her 5th of creativity.
Best wishes,
Nina
Good point, well said–thanks, Nina! And I’d like to say, love your blog! Readers, please visit Nina at http://gryphonastrology.com/blog

I don’t know if this is too off topic, but I’d be curious how Randy Pausch is related to the current eclipse. He passed away a week before Friday’s eclipse, and the speech that made him a minor celebrity was given a week after the September 2007 solar eclipse.
Maybe it’s just a coincidence?
The book that he co-authored is currently #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. There is a brief synopsis of his life on Wikipedia but I doubt you would be able to find an exact birth time for him.

I am truly sorry to hear about the loss of your Sweetie.
One thing that I have learned from my study of astrology is that looking up your transits is never a substitute for the support of friends and family.
All the best to you, your husband, and Sweetie’s sister.

Hi Matt,
I don’t know that passing away a week before an eclipse has any significance in and of itself–Sweetie died a week before, also, so I think we’ll just call it a coincidence
Thanks very much for your thoughtful condolences.

Thank you for this post. It just so happens that I was born on a solar eclipse ( March 7,1970)…this latest eclipse was right on top of my MC. I’ve been doing some research on eclipses to learn what that is all about and find there is not much info on eclipse in the birth chart.
I do have to vouch for the tumultousness and intensity..althought, despite being “from a solar eclipse”, I find that I experience the chaos as swirling around me as opposed to being the source of it. I wish I was! It rather seems everything I attempt to create and build for myself gets “occulted” by divine intervention, one way or the other, it’s so uncanny that I have to laugh – now I understand where it comes from…I think…
Thanks for the insight.

You’re welcome, C. I’m glad you found the post useful. I may be wrong about the Solar/ Lunar distinction in terms of how one experiences the effect, but one possibility may be that projection is at work, with others carrying the trauma or upset for you, and the ‘occulting’ might rather be the Universe pushing you in a more appropriate direction than those you’ve so far chosen. With a Solar Eclipse as a natal factor, it may be especially difficult to discern Soul direction. But, with the latest on your MC, you may be getting a serious glimpse of career/ public role potentials for yourself; info on what you might best create or build may be forthcoming between now and the next eclipse set of Jan/ Feb 2009. Good luck!

Thank you Julie.
I hope you are right- I could really use a hint in discerning my Soul’s desired direction because I’m quite at a loss right now as to what that is.
C.
You’re welcome, C. I think the point is that you’ve been getting hints all along, you just haven’t recognized them–and now they’re going to be stronger than ever. It’s so for all of us, that we are given the info or at least pushed in a direction that will eventually lead us to something we feel speaks to us, but it’s the rare individual who completely sees and responds to the messages given. Being at a loss is a good thing–it might make you frustrated enough to put aside the requirements and lenses you’ve been using to look at who you are and who you should be, and see what is really there, what gifts you have that you’re not aware of.

I am so happy to find something online regarding eclipses and birth! I was born 12 July 1972, three days I think after a full solar eclipse. I have always been curious what (if any) effect that had on my chart. I appreciate the compassion inherent in the work you do here; it is evident your heart is in this. Many Thanks.

Hello, MWB!
I’ve just begun looking into eclipses as a factor at birth, but am finding it an interesting area, and intend to continue exploring, so I’m glad to hear that there’s interest out there!
If I’m remembering correctly (all my books are packed as we are moving), Jan Spiller and Karen McCoy’s ‘SPIRITUAL ASTROLOGY: Your Personal Path to Self-Fulfillment’ covers the subject of pre-natal eclipses (which would technically be the case with the one three days before your birth). It contains a wealth of interesting information, specifically concerning the way eclipse patterns that occur during our ‘womb time’ may be very telling of experience orientation that follows, so it may be something you would be interested in.
Thanks very much for your kind words–I hope you’ll be a regular visitor!

Dear Julie, I was born in Oklahoma, USA on February 26, 1979 at 10:51 A.M. during a total solar eclipse. My father committed suicide when I was one year old, and my life hasn’t changed much since; I seem to loose everyone that I love. My friends have said they never seen or heard of anyone with so much loss and that I must be cursed. I never felt like I belonged in this world and I have been in constant turmoil my entire life, my mom said it was that way even as an infant. Your article on the subject has given me some peace knowing that everything is not my fault. My biggest battle has been within myself, maybe it’s because I’m a pisces, I don’t know. I can’t wait to learn more about solar eclipse babies. I am excited to see that someone has taken an interest in the effects that eclipses have on births. I think your work is great!
Thank you for everything, Michael

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your kind words, and your enthusiasm for the topic. You are at a good point right now for ‘beginning anew,’ as you’ve just passed your Saturn Return and Jupiter is headed toward conjunction with your natal Sun/Moon. With Solar Arc Pluto conj natal Uranus, and Solar Arc Uranus conj natal Neptune, it may be time for you to discover who you really are, and to let go of the illusion (for it is an illusion) that you are cursed or responsible in any way for the losses you’ve suffered.
One very hopeful note: in just under 3 years Solar Arc Neptune will reach conj with natal Venus, and this often manifests in the finding of an ‘ideal love’–so good luck!
Thank you, Michael–
Julie
